Specificity (Detailed): By radioimmunoassay, calculated to be 100% for hGH, cross-reactivity is 1% for prolactin and less than 1% for placental lactogen, follicle stimulating hormone, thyroid stimulating hormone and luteinizing hormone. Positive immunohistochemical staining for hGH is suggestive of tissue of pituitary origin. No other cells are known to be capable of producing pituitary hormones (1,2). Pituitary tumors, such as pituitary adenomas, may express hGH (3,4). Other pituitary hormones may also be produced but their absence does not exclude the diagnosis of pituitary adenoma (5-7).
