Specificity (Detailed): Monoclonal antibody to CA 19-9 reacts with the sialylated Le a -active pentasaccharide (sialylated lacto-N-fucopentaose II) which is enzymatically synthesized by sialylation of type-1 carbohydrate chains (2). Anti-CA 19-9 recognizes the sialic acid-containing residue of the monosialoganglioside (3). Removal of the sialic acid residue by neuraminidase treatment of tissue, eliminates positive immunoreactivity with anti-CA 19-9 (4).
